How to install a Colorbond fence

For many homeowners, a Colorbond fence is the perfect way to add some privacy or fencing to their garden. However, this type of fence can be difficult and expensive to install, which is why a lot of people opt for a fencing contractor Brisbane. This blog post will go through all the steps you need to know how to install a Colorbond fence to complete a successful installation with minimal effort. This article will discuss the five steps required to supply and install a Colorbond fence.

What is a Colorbond Fence?

A Colorbond fence is a type of aluminium fencing consisting of Colorbond fence panels that have been popular in Australia since the late 1960s. Colorbond fencing is our preferred fence and is available in 22 colours, it was initially designed to last longer than other fences, such as wood or chain link. The colour on the surface will fade over time and it can be painted with any exterior paint colours you want. Many homeowners like this type of fence because it does not require any additional maintenance, and kids or animals won’t scratch off their desired colour. Additionally, they are resistant to corrosion by saltwater and are used near coastal areas without rusting. These days many people install them around pools for protection from pets and children who might wander out onto your property during an unattended moment while at the pool!

A single Colorbond panel consists of two posts (which are concreted into the ground), an aluminium bottom rail which acts as a support for each post, an aluminium top rail which serves to hold up the sheeting on either end – 3 sheets total make up this type of fence-and coolant powder coating applied between every weld joint so no moisture can seep through it. These rails keep everything together while also keeping bugs and other nasties out.

Cost of Installing a Colorbond Fence

A lot of people choose Colorbond fencing because it is incredibly durable and requires little maintenance. The cost to install a fence does vary depending on the job; however, a rough pricing guide is around $100-140 per meter for the fence supplied and installed. This includes the panels and posts. Thus, Colorbond fences are rather affordable compared to other fencing types, such as wrought iron or aluminium.

Each Colorbond fence panel costs roughly $120 to purchase, with concrete and other materials required to complete the fence build. When including labour into the quote, the price can quickly rise above $100/meter for a smaller fence.

You won’t have to worry about your yard or animals running away when you get a Colorbond fence. It is durable, rugged and can withstand the wear and tear of nature in all sorts of weather conditions! Plus, it’s also affordable for any budget. For example, we recently finished a 36-meter long Colorbond fence job costing the owner $4150.

How to install the posts for a Colorbond fence

When installing a Colorbond fence, be sure to get all of the measuring right and place your posts 100% accurately. This is important because if you are off by just a few millimetres, it can be visible in between panels.

Before you start marking and digging holes, you should screw your Colorbond posts together to create an H shaped post, as seen in the image below. For the first panel and the last panel, you will not need to screw the posts together.

First, run a string line across where you want to position the fence, marking positions for your post holes 2.4m apart. Once you have dug the holes 600mm deep, you must restring the string line and start concreting each post one at a time. As mentioned earlier, you must be 100% accurate with this task as it is the most critical process when building a Colorbond fence.

If using rapid set concrete, the posts will set in the concrete within a matter of 15-30 minutes, which can save you a whole day depending on the length of your new fence build.

  1. Set the first post using a level to ensure it is straight.
  2. Attach the bottom rail into the first post to accurately line up the position of the next post.
  3. Set the next post maintaining the string line and level, so it is straight.
  4. Repeat this process until all posts are concreted.

How to assemble and mount the Colorbond panels on top of your posts

After the posts are all set and the concrete has dried, you can start attaching the bottom rails to the posts. The positioning of the bottom rail determines the height of your Colorbond fencing, so set this 1.8m below your ideal fence height.

Make sure to install all of the Colorbond fence sheets the same way, slide a sheet into the bottom rail, and push to flush with the post. Install the other side first before you install the middle sheet.

Once all three sheets are inside the posts and bottom rail, install the top rail and push it into the top of the sheets. You must constantly check all steps with a spirit level when straight screw the top rail into position.

Repeat this process for all the remaining panels.

After installing the Colorbond fence sheets and top rail, you must cut the post to match the height of the top rail. Using an angle grinder will get you an accurate and clean cut. Once all posts are cut to level, install the top cap, and your new fence is completed.

Installing gate hardware (hinges, latches, etc.)

A Colorbond gate is a stylish and practical home feature that can be installed in just one day. To install the Colorbond gate, you will need:

  • Two posts.
  • Four brackets for each post.
  • Three rails per side of the gate (cut to size).
  • Five hinges per rail (two on top and three on bottom).
  • Screws.
  • Bolts or nails.

First, start by assembling the frame for your gates using brackets attached to each post with screws. Next, attach the rails onto the brackets, so they are evenly spaced from each other. Finally, screw-in or bolt down your hinge pins into place before attaching them securely onto either railing with more screws/bolts/nails. This process should take around 30 minutes, depending on your ability and previous experience.
